Children have fun at the Dino Beach.

Even when the broiling sun beats down and the humidity often makes it seem like you could swim to work, there are ways to get out and enjoy the summer.

One of the best ways to beat the heat, or at least avoid the worst of it, is to go out at night when the temperature drops.

Jinjiang Amusement Park has already extended its daily opening hours to 10pm, which it does every summer.

Check out Shanghai Daily's guide to nighttime summer fun that offers more than just quality couch time with a DVD and the air conditioner set to "Arctic."

Fumin's nightlife hub

A taxi driver may kindly suggest stopping at the intersection of Fumin and Changle roads in Jing'an District. If you do stop, you won't be disappointed as this area springs to life at night.

Trendy people flock to the area and the fun doesn't stop until late at night as barbecue stalls serve a variety of snacks.

Opposite a mini street garden, lush trees form a tranquil corner that is only a five-minute walk from Huaihai Road M.

What attracts people are the cool drinks, colorful open-air seats and a delightful ambience to chat and appreciate a summer night.

Dolce Vita, an Italian restaurant whose name is derived from Italian cinema virtuoso Federico Fellini's namesake movie, is among the most popular hangouts.

The Mexican-styled Cantina Agave and Tsui Wah, a Hong Kong restaurant that has finally introduced an outlet here, also pack in the nighttime revelers. No.88 Bar opened at the end of April.

Water park

It's hard to imagine summer without swimming. But if packed out outdoor pools and far-flung suburban beaches don't impress, check out the Dakang Indoor Water Park in Zhabei District. It covers an area of 5,000 square meters and features a European style exterior.

The park is made for splishing and splashing with a wave pool, water slides, diving pool, kids pool, waterfall and fountain. The best part? You don't have to worry about getting a sunburn.

There's also Dino Beach in Minhang District. It's spread out over 10 hectares and features many of the same attractions. It's much bigger as it is outdoors.

Night at the museum

If you prefer something a little more sedate, then strolling around a museum could be just the thing.

Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art in People's Park is open until 10pm every Wednesday.

An exhibition of contemporary Indian art will run till August 31 at MoCA Shanghai.

The exhibition features pieces from a group of globally known Indian artists. They depict the influence of Indian culture in Asia.

Night markets

For those who can't stop shopping, clothes and accessories are available at Linfen Road market in Zhabei District.

CDs and DVDs can be found at the transfer channel of Metro Line 2 and 3 at Zhongshan Park Station.

Got the late night munchies? Try the street barbecue on Changli Road in Yangpu District.
